Help wanted: Lenoir County Board of Elections - Deputy of Elections

LENOIR COUNTY BOARD OF ELECTIONS

DEPUTY OF ELECTIONS - Salary Range: $31,500 - $43,423

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Performs administrative and registration duties in organizing and maintaining voter records, County candidates' filing records, and supporting the Director in organizing the elections process for the County and the Elections Board.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: An employee in this class is responsible for data entry of new and existing voter registration applications, existing voter cards and changes of addresses. Work also includes supporting the Supervisor of Elections in maintaining procedures and methods used in registration, receiving and processing of voter registrations, and filing of candidates for elected office in the County. Employee performs administrative and clerical functions a significant percentage of the time. Independent judgment and initiative, tact and courtesy are required in operating the elections office, overseeing the filing process and dealing with the general public. Work is performed in accordance with State election laws, policies and procedures established by the County Board of Elections. The Director of Elections evaluates work through reports, conferences, and efficiency of office and elections operations.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK

• Assists Director in planning for various elections on an annual basis covering primaries, municipal and county elections, general elections, special elections; projects and daily office operation.

• Work includes data entry of new and existing voter registrations, creation of reports and maintenance of computer files.

• Receives, compiles, and reports information and assists Director in elections training sessions, editing training manuals and proofreading ballots for elections.

• Receives applications for registration; ascertains that applicants are eligible to register in the County; administers voter registration oath.

• Receives filing fees from candidates for County offices and other candidates designated by the State Board of Elections.

• Maintains computer system and software for voter registration; maintains current registration files; enters new registrations and voting history; makes changes and deletions; enters election results; sets up each election, runs and verifies rosters for polling places; runs statistical reports and keeps data updated.

• Prepares and submits required and requested reports regarding election activities.

• Attends State seminars and Institute of Government training sessions.

• Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

• Thorough knowledge of electoral procedures and policies as set forth in general statutes and regulations of the State Board of Elections.

• Considerable knowledge of modern office practices, procedures, and equipment.

• Working knowledge of the operations and functions of County government.

• Skill in operation of computer and related equipment.

• Ability to perform assignments on the basis of general directions and to perform continuing assignments independently.

• Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written forms.

• Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with precinct officials, elected officials, news media, County officials, Board members, other employees and the general public.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Must be able to perform the basic life operational skills of reaching, pulling, lifting, fingering, talking and repetitive motions.

• Must be able to perform sedentary work, exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects.

• Must possess the visual acuity to prepare and analyze data and figures, operate a computer terminal, do extensive reading, and read at distances close to the eyes.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Graduation from high school including business courses and administrative experience dealing with the public; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Preference given to persons with some college education and experience or knowledge of the electoral process.
