Local students in Lenoir and Greene Counties were recently recognized for their outstanding work in Greene Lamp's 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance Program. The competition, which was open to middle and high school students, asked participants to submit an original essay, song, or poem on their reflection and research regarding the impact of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

“We would like to present Miss Jenesis Murphy and Miss Armani Bailey with our Stronger Together Award Essay winner competition,” said Sharonda Graham, Volunteer Program Specialist with Greene Lamp Community Action.

The two 7th graders from Rochelle Middle School who were not alive during the historical event, had one month to complete their submission. The winners were recognized at an event attended by the Rochelle Middle School administration and staff, first responders, Linda Rouse Sutton, County Commissioner Chairperson, and Felicia Solomon, City of Kinston Council member.

Greene Lamp's 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance Program aims to honor the victims and survivors of the September 11 attacks and to encourage volunteerism and community service. The program also seeks to educate students about the importance of September 11 as a historical event and its impact on the world.
