Unsung Hero: Harold Sutton - Shaping Our Parks for 14 Years
In this week's edition of Unsung Heroes, our focus shifts to a dedicated individual who has made a lasting impact on Lenoir County's recreational spaces. Harold Sutton earns recognition as our Unsung Hero for the week. You may not know his face, but the work of his hands is seen every day in our community.
He is a lifelong resident of Lenoir County. For the past 14 years, he has poured his energy into Kinston/Lenoir County Parks and Recreation. Starting as a crew supervisor, he steadily climbed the ranks. When the former Park Superintendent, vacated his position, Sutton assumed the role, holding it for almost eight years.
So, what does a typical week entail for Sutton? He and his team manage the maintenance of parks and facilities. Their duties span mowing extensive grassy areas, maintaining ball fields and playgrounds, overseeing pool operations, and handling plumbing, electrical, roofing, and more. Their efforts ensure the cleanliness and safety of our parks.
His appreciation for the parks is evident. He was astounded by the multitude of parks and facilities upon joining Parks and Recreation. With approximately 17 to 18 basketball courts, numerous ball fields, and countless recreational spaces, Lenoir County offers a plethora of opportunities for residents.
Regarding his proudest accomplishments with Parks and Recreation, he mentions his role in the creation of the Kinston Community Center and the water park. He played a vital part in constructing the water park slides' foundations and piers, a challenging task carried out in the sweltering heat of July and August.
In every success story, guiding individuals play a pivotal role. He acknowledges several who have been instrumental in his journey. Bill Ellis provided him with the opportunity to work in Parks and Recreation. He also credits Cory Povar, the current Parks and Recreation Director, for entrusting him with responsibilities that have contributed to his success. Additionally, he attributes his values of hard work and dedication to his parents.
Sutton encourages everyone to explore Lenoir County's parks and facilities. He emphasizes their commitment to maintaining these spaces for the community's enjoyment. Our parks offer a variety of activities, waiting for residents to discover.
