Snow Hill Post Office Ranks Second in NC for Cancer Fundraiser
Snow Hill: So Close. . .
Snow Hill post office joined the fight against breast cancer in the U. S. Post Office Breast Cancer Awareness initiative during October 2023. The results were phenomenal for the Snow Hill Office. Competing with all the post offices in North Carolina, the office finished second in the state, behind New Bern which placed first. Being within less than $600 behind New Bern, Snow Hill office sales were $8731 and New Bern’s sales were $9270. This was quite a feat for Snow Hill with a population of less than 1600 and New Bern’s population is over 31000.
The sales, which involved the purchase of a sheet of the 20 special Breast Cancer stamps, with $4.00 being donated to the cause. Postmaster Robert Jenner explains the actual number of stamps sold and how it calculated for the cause: “. . .take $8731[Snow Hill’s sales] and divide by $.80 for each stamp, we sold 10914 stamps, with 20 per sheet is 545 sheets with $4 per sheet going to breast cancer research. We raised $2182 for research.”
Postmaster Jenner praised the employees for their efforts in promoting the sales. Entering the sales counter artea of the post office with its elaborate promotional message, one realized Snow Hill was truly engaged in the project. Their efforts resulted in clerk Cynthia Williams being 2nd in the state in sales and clerk Yvonne Laureano finishing third.
Jenner is truly proud of the Snow Hill office and its employees. He states, “I am so proud of the accomplishment of the employees of the Snow Hill Post Office as well as our community for making the Snow Hill Post Office #2 in Breast Cancer Awareness stamp sales in the entire state of North Carolina and supporting the Postal Service’s promotion of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It was great to see our customers’ engagement in the promotion and the competition with all of the other Post Offices in North Carolina. For the first 3 weeks of October, Snow Hill was the leader in sales. The last few days of the month, the lead flipped back and forth between Snow Hill and New Bern, whose population is more than 20 times that of Snow Hill. Each day, customers would come in and ask us if we were still #1. Everybody had a lot of fun and we are all looking forward to doing even better next October and bringing the trophy to Snow Hill.”
The breast cancer stamp is available throughout the year. It is one of the only four fund raisers that the postal service promotes in the offices throughout the United States; they are Breast Cancer Awareness, PTSD, Save Vanishing Species and Alzheimer’s. The Breast Cancer Research Semipostal was first issued July 29, 1998 in Washington, DC.
As of the end of November 2023, more than 1.1 billion Breast Cancer Research stamps had been sold, bringing the total revenue raised to more than $97 million.
A special thank you to the Snow Hill postal employees and customers who so willingly participated in this important health initiative.
