13-year-old shot in Kinston, non-life-threatening injuries reported

On Wednesday, October 9, 2024, at approximately 8:01 PM, Kinston Police Officers were dispatched to a report of a gun shot victim in the area of Jack Rountree Apartments. Officers were also advised that the victim had been transported to UNC Lenoir via personal vehicle. Officers responded to both Jack Rountree and to UNC Lenoir.  Contact was made with the victim, a juvenile, and family at the hospital. The victim was suffering from a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the right arm. 

Officers located the scene of the incident near the 2100 block of Viking Dr.  Kinston Detectives and Crime Scene personnel responded and are actively conducting further investigation into the incident.

A 13-year-old student was shot this evening in the Jack Rountree area.

Kinston Police Chief Keith Goyette confirmed the incident, stating, "A juvenile was shot this evening in Jack Rountree and taken to the hospital before EMS arrived." Fortunately, the victim sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

KPD is actively investigating the case, and a formal press release is expected Thursday morning. This is a developing story, and updates will follow as more information becomes available.
