The holiday season officially kicks off in downtown Kinston with the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony on Saturday, Nov. 23, 2024, at Pearson Park (210 W. Gordon St.). Hosted by Downtown Kinston Revitalization (DKR), the annual "Turn On the Holidays" event begins at 6 p.m., promising an evening filled with music, performances, and holiday cheer.

The ceremony will feature the lighting of Kinston’s Christmas tree, accompanied by live music from Jerry Coyle, dance routines, Christmas carols, and an appearance by Santa Claus himself. The event also marks the opening of the Tinsel Trail, a six-week-long festive display of decorated trees throughout the park.

"This is one of my favorite nights of the year," said Leon Steele, Executive Director of DKR. "There’s something magical about seeing the community gather together to celebrate the start of the holiday season under the lights of the Christmas tree."

The Tinsel Trail, a beloved tradition, showcases trees sponsored and decorated by local businesses, organizations, and families. It will remain on display for the community to enjoy through the Christmas season.

"This event is about more than just turning on the lights," Steele said. "It’s about turning on the spirit of the holidays for our entire community. It’s a time to reflect, connect, and celebrate what makes Kinston special."

In addition to the tree lighting, attendees can look forward to festive treats, holiday music, and plenty of photo opportunities with Santa. Among the highlights of this year’s tree lighting ceremony are performances by local dance groups Moove and Stage Lyfe, as well as a brand-new 18-foot tall, 16-foot wide display near the CSS Neuse II Confederate ironclad gunboat replica at the corner of 400 W. Gordon and 118 N. Herritage streets.
