Man charged with murder after fatal shooting in Greene County

Homicide Arrest

On 12/20/2024 around 12:10 am Greene County Deputies along with Greene County EMS responded to a subject who had been shot at a residence on Royce Dr in the Jason area of Greene County. Upon arrival Deputies found the resident of the home, 62-year-old Melvin Hawkins had been shot multiple times and that the shooter had fled the scene. EMS transported Hawkins to ECU Health, where he later passed due to his injuries.

Witnesses advised that Hawkins and a male subject, 40-year-old Emmanuel Williams were together in the home when an altercation between the two started over Hawkins requesting Williams leave. During the altercation witnesses stated that Williams shot Hawkins and left the scene. While Deputies were still on scene Williams returned to the scene. Williams had apparent lacerations and EMS was contacted and transported him to UNC Wayne Memorial where he received treatment for his lacerations. Williams who had an outstanding Order for Arrest for Failure to Appear on traffic violations was taken into custody after being treated for his injuries.

After reviewing evidence and statements, Investigators charged Williams with an Open Count of Murder and he is currently being held in the Greene County Detention Center under no bond.
