Neuse Regional Libraries Teens Lead Internship Program
Amber Hargett
The first cohorts of the Teens Lead Internship Program at the Kinston-Lenoir County Public Library and Greene County Public Library wrapped up this month. Congratulations to participants Layla Flores, McKenzie McCoy, Kevonte Parks, Camila Cisneros-Perez, Kaylee Sugg, and Daysy Vasquez for their successful completion of the program.
What is Teens Lead? One of the participants, Kaylee, described the program in a blog post she created for her internship project. Here is the program described in Kaylee’s words:
Teens Lead is a way you can gain volunteer hours through an internship setting. It is done through the library. There is an application, and 6 interns were chosen to spend around 8 hours in the library per week during the Fall of 2024. Interns help prepare, participate in, and clean up after cooking and STEM programs. Interns also perform at least twelve volunteer hours outside the internship, set up with the library’s assistance at locations such as Trunk or Treats, Mary's Soup Kitchen, Parades, and more! Interns also complete lessons that set us up for success not only in our careers but also help us organize our time and finances, and we also learn the basics of how to become an entrepreneur! All participants also complete a STEM-based project.
If you are interested in becoming an intern, fill out the Library’s application. Selected applications will proceed to an interview (make sure not to wear sweats or ripped jeans). Library coordinators will ask you a few questions about your activities, where you go to school, what prompted you to sign up, how you manage all your commitments, and some other things. Participants will know within a week if you are accepted and then, within a week or two, your internship begins! You will not regret it!
The Library is currently accepting applications through December 23, 2024 for the next cohort; we will continue to offer this program in future school semesters. For more information on how to apply, please call 252-527-7066, Ext. 133.
