Celebrate Black History Month with the Smart Kinston Foundation's celebration
The Smart Kinston Foundation is excited to announce a special Black History Month celebration at the Smart Gallery at 210 N. Queen Street on February 24, 2024, from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm. This unique event will feature the works of four prominent Smart Kinston Artists, including Maximillian Mozingo, Jamil Burton, Maner Nobles, and Davida Rawls, offering a vibrant exploration of African American art and culture.
Maximillian Mozingo, a self-taught artist from Goldsboro, is known for his versatile use of mediums and his belief that "Art is Life." Mozingo's work ranges from fine art to custom clothing, all infused with a deep sense of purpose and mission.
"As an artist, I am essentially interested in creating works that reveal those things which are hidden or felt in the human soul. My art flows from intuition and instinct," Mozingo expressed, underscoring his commitment to using art as a tool for reflection and inspiration.
Joining Mozingo is Jamil Burton, a visual artist and illustrator with a rich background in fine art and illustration. Burton's art, deeply inspired by family, community, and the multitude of the black experience, uses bold colors and imagery to evoke optimism and emotion.
"My art is a collection of stories, a celebration of humanity. I share the black experience that is vivid in color and bold with its truth," Burton stated, highlighting his dedication to capturing the essence of cultural and emotional narratives through his work.
Maner Nobles, a devoted artist and community mentor, is known for her efforts to foster local talent and promote art as a means of social connection and therapy. Nobles' involvement in community initiatives, such as senior painting groups, underscores her belief in the therapeutic power of art.
"Art is therapeutic at any age," Nobles explained, advocating for the role of art in maintaining social bonds and community spirit.
Davida Rawls, whose work spans pour art and writing, brings a personal touch to her creations, often drawing inspiration from her close family ties and the supportive relationship with her mother. Rawls' artistry is a testament to the profound impact of personal experiences and relationships on creative expression.
The Smart Kinston Foundation invites the community to join in this celebration of art, history, and culture. The event is an opportunity to engage with the artists, learn about their processes and inspirations, and experience firsthand the power of art to unite and inspire.
Don't miss this chance to support local artists and celebrate the rich heritage of African American artistry. The event is free and open to the public. Join us at the Smart Gallery on February 24th for an afternoon of art, conversation, and community.
