Stein rallies for unity and progress in gubernatorial bid
On Thursday at Queen Street Deli, North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein, now a gubernatorial candidate, addressed a crowd on his visions and commitments for the state's future. The event, highlighted by local dignitaries including Mayor Don Hardy and Councilmember Chris Suggs, underscored Stein's focus on education, public health, and community engagement.
Mayor Hardy extended a warm welcome to attendees, emphasizing the city's rich history and vibrant community. "On behalf of the city of Kinston and an outstanding warm welcome to you all, whether you're a longtime resident or a newcomer, Kinston embraces you with open arms," Hardy stated, highlighting the city's inclusive spirit.
Councilmember Suggs shared his personal interaction with Stein, reflecting on the Attorney General's consistent support for young people and education.
"For the last five and a half years, since being Attorney General, Stein has stayed in communication with me. Whenever you see him, he always remembers who I am, asking how school's going, how things are going here in Kinston. He's been a real champion for us," Suggs recounted, advocating for Stein's gubernatorial candidacy based on his track record of supporting education and voter rights.
Stein, in his address, passionately outlined the challenges and opportunities facing North Carolina, from the need to safeguard democracy and public education to addressing climate change and healthcare. "North Carolina is home to friendly and good people, always with a warm smile," Stein began, painting a picture of a state rich in natural beauty and human resourcefulness. He then turned his attention to the current political climate, criticizing right-wing policies he views as detrimental to the state's foundational values.
"Right-wing politicians in Raleigh are taking a sledgehammer to its foundation," Stein asserted, citing issues such as gerrymandering, the undermining of public education, and attacks on reproductive rights.
Stein's speech also highlighted his accomplishments as Attorney General, particularly his efforts in combating the opioid crisis and ensuring justice for survivors of sexual assault.
"We led the national bipartisan effort as Attorney Generals to take the big opioid drug companies to court, and we won more than $55 billion, with one and a half billion for North Carolina," Stein proudly shared, showcasing his commitment to fighting for the people of North Carolina.
Stein called upon the citizens to join him in his fight for a better North Carolina, one that upholds the values of freedom, justice, and opportunity for all.
"Let's come together, let's get to work, and together we will build a North Carolina that is safer, stronger, and more prosperous for everybody," Stein concluded, setting a tone of unity and determination for his gubernatorial campaign.
