Obituary: Herman Hassell McLawhorn

Herman Hassell McLawhorn, 94, of Kinston, passed away on Wednesday, April 24, 2024. He was one of ten children born to Herman and Fonnie McLawhorn. He grew up on the family farm. He served in the US Army in Korea. He attended East Carolina College (ECU), majoring in Accounting and worked for Simon Sitterson PA as a Staff Accountant and later at Neil Realty Group, Neil Medical Group as Comptroller. After retirement, he dedicated his time to veterans, as he was a member of American Legion Post 43, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2771, Golden Kiwanis Club, and founding member of Salute: A Tribute to America’s Veterans and curator of The Walk of Honor. He was a founding member of Faith Fellowship Church.

He is survived by his daughters, Susan (Glenn) Spencer and Kellie Beasley both of Wilmington, NC; son, Ed (Aimy) Cook of Greenville, SC; daughter, Patsy Cook of Ponte Vedre Beach, FL; and son, Brian (Tracey) Cook of Dumfries, VA; eleven grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; sister, Joyce M. Moore of The Villages, FL; special niece, Donna McLawhorn of Snow Hill; special friend who he thought of as a brother, Wilson P. Jones of Deep Run; many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, as well as great grand nieces and nephews and many cousins, and his beloved dachshund, Dixie.

He is predeceased by his loving wife, Bonnie H. McLawhorn; his siblings, Carma Pate, William McLawhorn, Virgie Daniels, Georgie Kilpatrick, Thelma Simpkins, Peggy Creech, Douglas McLawhorn, and Kenneth McLawhorn, as well as his parents.

Funeral services will be held graveside at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 4, 2024 at the Veterans’ Mausoleum at Pinelawn Memorial Park, 4488 US Highway 70 West, Kinston, NC 28504.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to GI Joe’s Military Living History Museum, 1165 B, Highway 11/55 South, Kinston, NC 28501 or Pruitt Health Hospice and Palliative Care, 2313 A Executive Circle, Greenville, NC 27834.
