UNC Health Lenoir and Kinston Community Health Center join forces to fight lung cancer

Did you know that lung cancer is the second leading cause of cancer occurrence in both men and women and the leading cause of cancer deaths?  You may qualify for a FREE lung cancer screening if you are between the ages of 50 and 80 years old and are a current or past smoker.

Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer, with almost 80% of all lung cancer deaths in the United States caused by smoking. Deaths caused by lung cancer can be prevented if the cancer is caught at an early stage, with a 5-year survival rate of 63%, compared to only 8% when caught at an advanced stage. Lung cancer screening with a low-dose CT scan has been shown to catch lung cancer early in people who are at a higher risk.

UNC Health Lenoir Cancer Center, Kinston Community Health Center, and American Cancer Society have partnered together to help improve lung cancer screening rates for eligible members of our community by increasing awareness and education regarding lung cancer screening and offering resources to ensure everyone who qualifies has access to this screening. There will be a FREE lung cancer screening event offered at UNC Health Lenoir on Saturday, June 29, 2024, for people who are uninsured and qualify for a lung cancer low-dose CT scan. There are a limited number of appointments available for this event, so please sign up early. For questions about registering for the event or for more information on lung cancer screening, please contact UNC Health Lenoir Cancer Center at 252-522-7280 or Kinston Community Health Center at 252-522-9800. Participants will receive financial assistance after the CT scan for follow up care if needed.
