Addison Canady, a young angler from the area, made waves at the Third Annual Big Rock Kids Tournament held from July 10-13, 2024. The tournament, which promotes sport fishing among the youth and benefits children’s charities in Eastern North Carolina, saw 73 boats and over 350 junior anglers participating this year.

“I got to fish with my friends,” said Addison Canady. “I met them last year when we fished with them for the first time and I look forward to fishing this tournament every year because I really enjoy it and it gives me an opportunity to do what I love. The Big Rock Foundation gives back to our community in many ways and I am happy to be a small part of it.

Canady, fishing aboard the local charter boat Island Girl, secured third place in the heaviest dolphin category with a 6.7-pound catch. Her impressive performance had her holding first place until late Sunday afternoon, when two other boats weighed in heavier catches, landing her in the third position.

“We are so proud of Addison and Jackson and the entire crew fishing the 4th annual Big Rock Kid's Tournament with Island Girl Charter,” said Tiffany Canady, Addison's mother. “These guys definitely put in the work, and Addison came home with third place for heaviest dolphin! Jackson even got himself one too.”

Jackson Canady, Addison's brother, also participated in the tournament, contributing to the family's pride in the event. The Island Girl Charter, captained by Rob Best, provided a platform for these young anglers to showcase their talents.

“I made some new friends and got to do what I love… fishing!” said Jackson Canady.

The Big Rock Kids Tournament, a total release event, aims to instill a love for sport fishing in the younger generation while supporting charitable causes. The tournament's growing popularity was evident with an increase in participation this year compared to previous years.

The tournament also featured various categories, including billfish releases and weight-based prizes for species like dolphin, wahoo, and others. The event's competitive spirit and charitable focus make it a significant fixture in the local fishing community.
