Today marks the 40th anniversary of Mary’s Kitchen, a local nonprofit dedicated to serving those in need. Established in July 1984, Mary’s Kitchen has become a cornerstone of the community, providing meals to anyone who walks through its doors.

Located at 110 N. Independence Street in downtown Kinston, Mary’s Kitchen offers a lunchtime meal every day of the year. In 2023 alone, the organization served over 55,000 meals, averaging approximately 171 meals per day.

“It’s to put ourselves out of business,” said Jim Godfrey, Executive Director, when asked about the organization's ultimate goal.

Mary’s Kitchen was founded by the Rev. Dr. John Russell, then Rector of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church. What started as a dream has grown into a vital community service supported by a network of local churches, religious communities, businesses, non-profit organizations, and families. These contributions are crucial in covering food, maintenance, and utility expenses.
