Big Lots in Kinston avoids closure amid national store shutdowns

Despite the financial challenges leading to the closure of hundreds of Big Lots stores across the country, the location in Kinston at 2407 N Herritage St will remain open, according to company disclosures.

Big Lots, a discount retailer known for its affordable home goods and seasonal merchandise, has faced significant economic pressures in 2024. The company has already announced plans to close between 35 to 40 stores nationwide, with one location in North Carolina — the store at 2000 Avondale Drive in Durham — confirmed for closure. Kinston’s store, however, is not on the list.

Like many retailers, Big Lots has struggled with increased inflation and reduced consumer spending. In a recent financial disclosure, the company acknowledged that these factors had weakened its position in the marketplace. "In 2024, the U.S. economy has continued to face macroeconomic challenges, including elevated inflation, which has adversely impacted the buying power of our customers,” the statement read.

While Kinston’s store remains unaffected, the broader outlook for Big Lots is still uncertain. The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection earlier this week and has plans to sell some assets and close as many as 250 additional stores by January 2025. The company has yet to specify which locations will be impacted.

As of now, Big Lots in Kinston will continue serving local customers, even as the company navigates financial uncertainty.
