A Kinston man was arrested Tuesday after shots were fired outside a Big John Road residence.

On Tuesday, Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office patrol units responded to a report of shots fired in the 2600 block of Big John Road. The LCSO received a report that James Best, 32, had fired four to five shots outside a residence.

When deputies arrived, they located Best sitting on a front porch of a residence. They detained him and started investigating the incident.

With assistance from LCSO investigators and SCARR (Street Crimes and Ready Response) units, deputies canvassed the area and spoke with witnesses. Shell casings were located in the front yard of the residence beside the porch where Best was located.

After further investigation and canvassing the area, a handgun was found in the backyard of the residence under a car tire.

Best was placed under arrest and transported to the Lenoir County Magistrate’s Office for processing. He was charged with one count of felony possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and received a $75,000 secured bond.
