The long-awaited resurfacing of Vernon Avenue is set to begin in mid-March, following a series of sewer and utility improvements that started last year.

According to Jonathan Ran, public information officer for NCDOT Divisions 2 and 8, contractors will be able to start work on the milling and filling portion of the project on March 15. However, additional work will take place before then.

"Vernon Avenue’s milling and filling contract is available starting March 15, but the contract also includes replacement of curb and gutter in areas," Ran said. "This curb and gutter work is tentatively scheduled ahead of March 15. No specific dates are scheduled yet. The completion date for this project is July 31."

The resurfacing project follows a $2.3 million sewer improvement project.

Kinston City Manager Rhonda Barwick shared an update from the city.

“Our utility work along Vernon Ave. is complete with the exception of a few punch list items on valve boxes or manhole rings,” said Barwick. “Weather permitting, you will see our crews in some areas on Vernon completing those items next week.”

Once the utility work is completed, NCDOT will move forward with resurfacing the roadway, ensuring long-term improvements to one of Kinston’s major thoroughfares.
