Brenda Hernandez-Flores: Balancing education, career, and campus involvement
By: Cailyn Kennedy
Juggling a full-time job, college coursework, and extracurricular involvement is no easy task, but Brenda Hernandez-Flores has found a way to make it work. As she prepares to graduate with her second degree from Lenoir Community College, she has proven that with determination, time management, and a willingness to stay involved, students can take on big goals without having to sacrifice personal or professional growth.
Flores is earning an Associate in Applied Science (AAS) in Business Administration while also completing three certificates—one in business and two in accounting. This follows the Associate in Science (AA) degree she earned in 2022. Through it all, she has maintained an impressive 3.698 cumulative GPA, achieving a perfect 4.0 in her last three semesters.
Beyond academics, Flores has built valuable real-world experience in the business field. She first joined Bojangles, a subsidiary of Tands, Inc., where her strong work ethic and dedication quickly set her apart. Recognizing her potential, the company offered her an opportunity to transition into the corporate office, where she now plays an integral role in business operations. Balancing her full-time job with school has been a challenge, but one she has embraced with determination and focus.
"Brenda is an exemplary student," said Kristy Grady, Business Administration Program Chair. "She demonstrates dedication and commitment both in the classroom and beyond. With impressive academic achievements, she consistently earns top grades while actively participating in the Business & Accounting Club. She goes above and beyond, balancing the demands of a full-time job and school by prioritizing campus activities and lending a helping hand to ensure the success of club events. Her passion for learning and involvement in the community makes her a standout leader and role model for peers."

Flores’ campus involvement extends well beyond the classroom. As an active member of the Business & Accounting Club, she often attends events during her lunch breaks to stay connected with fellow students. Last fall, she participated in the Dress for Success event, where she walked the runway in professional attire to help promote confidence and professionalism among her peers.
"She is a powerhouse of determination and leadership," said Penni Bland, Business Administration Instructor. "Whether she’s excelling in the classroom, contributing at Bojangles’ corporate office, or leading as our business club secretary, she embodies hard work, professionalism, and passion for business."
This year, Flores has taken on a new leadership role as the narrator and interviewer for an upcoming department podcast, where she will interview local business owners and community leaders. This experience ties into one of her long-term goals of launching her own podcast. “I see this podcast as an opportunity to gain valuable experience while helping other students learn from business professionals in the community,” says Flores.
"Her ability to manage multiple responsibilities while excelling in every role is a testament to her work ethic and leadership skills," Bland added. "She’s not just a student; she’s a future business leader in the making!"
Flores’ journey highlights how students can take advantage of opportunities at community colleges to grow academically, professionally, and personally. Through hard work and involvement, she has built skills and connections that will serve her well in the future. As she moves forward, Flores plans to continue to explore new opportunities and develop her career, showing that with planning and effort, students can reach their goals while managing work, school, and other commitments.
