Congressman Greg Murphy pays tribute to local veterans
Representative Greg Murphy of the third Congressional District visited the G. I. Joe Museum on Hwy 11 last Friday. He came to Kinston to pay his respects to local veterans and speak about current issues facing them.
After the short speech, Murphy paid a heartfelt tribute to veteran Eric Cantu, the president of SALUTE and the GI Joe’s Military Living History Museum. (SALUTE is a local organization that unites veteran organizations locally, including the American Legion, AMVETS, Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), and the Vietnam Veterans of America, (VVA).)
Cantu thanked him for his efforts on behalf of veterans and presented an American flag pin to Murphy. Murphy then toured the museum to see the displays created to commemorate Kinston veterans and their accomplishments as service members.
In his current term, Murphy was appointed to the Ways and Means Committee in Washington D.C., the most powerful committee in the House of Representatives. Members of this committee may only serve on one committee, but he requested a waiver to serve with Veteran’s Affairs as well because of his commitment to veterans. The only practicing physician in Congress, Murphy seeks to revolutionize veterans' healthcare to give veterans a better experience.
