Pursuant to G.S. 115C-518 and 160A-269, the Lenoir County Board of Education hereby gives notice that it has received an offer to purchase the Teacher’s Memorial School property owned by the Lenoir County Board of Education.  The property’s street address is 500 Marcella Drive Kinston, NC 28501. The offer to purchase is in the amount of One Hundred Fifty-One Thousand Dollars ($151,000.00). Notice is hereby given that prior to September 28, 2023, at 4:00 PM, any person may raise the bid by not less than ten percent (10%) of the first one thousand dollars ($1000) and five percent (5%) of the remainder ($150,000). Therefore, the lowest acceptable upset bid is One Hundred Fifty-Eight Thousand Six Hundred Dollars ($158,600.00).

Obituary: Lewellyn Davis Bradshaw

Mrs. Lewellyn Davis Bradshaw, best known as “Lew”, passed away Monday evening at Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro. Funeral services will be held graveside 11 AM Thursday, September 21st, at the Westview Cemetery with Reverend Glenn Hill officiating. The family will greet friends and extended relatives immediately following the service at the cemetery and other times at Mrs. Bradshaw’s residence.

Obituary: Judy Jernigan Fields

Judy Jernigan Fields passed away peacefully at home on Monday, September 18, 2023. A Service of Love and Remembrance will be held in the chapel of Rouse Funeral Home on Friday, September 22, 2023 at 3:00 pm. Visitation will take place an hour prior to the service, 2:00 pm. Following the service, the family will receive friends at Judy’s home.

Caitlin Waters Crowned 2024 Distinguished Young Woman of Lenoir County

On Saturday, over $12,000 in scholarships and other gifts were given to the Distinguished Young Women of Lenoir County Class of 2024.  The Distinguished Young Woman of Lenoir County program is part of a nationwide effort to recognize, reward, and encourage excellence and education among all young people. Seven senior girls competed for the scholarships. Participants were Gabby Smith, Tiyah Chapman, Leanna Kivett, Shamiah Hall, Grayson Lynch, Kalyn Brock, and Caitlin Waters. 

Letter of Intent Now Open for Lenoir/Greene United Way

Lenoir/Greene United Way invites interested nonprofit organizations to submit a letter of intent to request funding for the 2024 application cycle.  Applicants must meet the following guidelines to pursue funding: 501c3 nonprofit organization, Agency in good standing, Meets at least (1) community impact area of Education, Health or Financial Sustainability, Fully complies with required documentation and grant reporting from Lenoir/Greene United Way, Ability to provide measurable goals and outcomes on service population.

Mike Parker: Was I was doing it all wrong?

I recently heard a news report about the push to change how teachers grade their students’ work from a points-based system to a standard-based evaluation. Part of the ideas behind this push for “equity” in grading includes allowing retakes for tests, multiple revisions for essays, and eliminating behavioral considerations such as late work and absences as part of grades.

Obituary: Raeford “Tad Pole” Jones

Raeford “Tad Pole” Jones, 78, went to be with the Lord and Saviour on Sunday, September 17, 2023, surrounded by family at his home. Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 2:00 pm Wednesday, September 20, 2023 at Pleasant Hill Christian Church, Pink Hill, NC with funeral service at 2:00 pm. Burial will follow at Griffin Family Cemetery.

Help Wanted: Sports Videographer

Magic Mile Media, Inc. and Neuse News/Neuse News Sports are growing, and we are searching for an amateur, independent videographer. Our Neuse News Sports team covers Lenoir, Greene, and Jones counties, including 17 schools and 17 sports. Our largest need is capturing content at local high school sports games. The role requires access to a DSLR 1080p 60fps, 17-70mm 2.8f, or 24-75mm 2.8f lens. Must send links to past videos. Compensation is negotiable and DOQ. We prefer individuals within 45 minutes of downtown Kinston.
