Parkinson's Support Group hosts awareness walk at UNC Health Lenoir

Members of the Kinston Parkinson's Support Group gathered at the walking trail of UNC Health Lenoir this April for their annual walk to raise awareness about Parkinson's disease, a tradition dating back to 2008.

Judy Heath, the facilitator of the support group, expressed her gratitude for the people who came out.

"We are so thankful to have support for our Parkinson's support group," said Heath, whose late husband, Henry, inspired the name "Team Henry" for their walk.

The group, which now boasts 40 members, meets monthly to exchange ideas and host speakers, with their gathering in April coinciding with Parkinson's Awareness Month.

Since the passing of her husband Henry in 2017, Judy and her fellow group members have continued their walks, including the annual November state walks and the local April event. Henry was a dedicated member of the group and contributed as a speaker from time to time.

"He was my speaker from time to time," Heath shared. "And we just are so appreciative of the awareness that we hope to be getting out today and just letting people know about Parkinson's and that we still get around and we still do things and we still enjoy walking and any kind of activity that we can do."

The Kinston Parkinson's Support Group, which gathers at Airy Grove Christian Church on the third Wednesday of each month, has been instrumental in providing a supportive environment for those affected by Parkinson's in the community.

Parkinson's disease affects thousands of people in the United States annually, with symptoms that vary widely among individuals. While there is no cure, ongoing research and treatment options aim to manage the condition's impact.

The annual walk not only raises awareness about Parkinson's disease but also honors the memory of loved ones like Henry Heath, whose dedication and spirit live on through the efforts of Team Henry and the Kinston Parkinson's Support Group.
