Forries L. Dawson

February 12, 1929 - January 8, 2019

Forries Lincoln Dawson, 89, of Kinston, passed away on Tuesday, January 8, 2019. Forries was born February 12, 1929 in Lenoir County to the late Edwin Dawson and Ollie Benton Dawson.

Forries loved life and lived it to the fullest. He enjoyed having a good time, but also knew how to make the most of his time. Forries was dedicated to his career as an automobile mechanic. Forries’ quiet days gave him the opportunity to take part in one of his favorite hobbies, saltwater fishing. Never one to be idle, Forries could often be found piddling outside in his shop. He spent many an afternoon woodworking and making crafts. He enjoyed being outdoors and especially taking care of his yard. The garden and flower beds were where Forries could dirty his hands and clear his thoughts.

Forries was known to cook some of his finest dishes out in the shop. He could barbecue a delicious pig and no one made fish stew, chicken pastry, or collards like his. Forries’ family has fond memories of times spent together around the table savoring a good meal and reveling in good fellowship.

Seizing each day, Forries enjoyed all the gifts that life had to offer. He was musically talented and liked to sing and dance. The soothing sounds of bluegrass, country and gospel held a special place in his heart and he often played his favorite tunes on the guitar. However, the sounds of his children’s and grandchildren’s laughter was the real music of his life.

Forries was a man of his word, and his word was his bond. With strong character, he was honest, trustworthy, and dependable. It has often been said that children and animals are the best judge of character, and Forries had a way with both. He took great pleasure in time shared with family and friends, and will surely be missed by those who knew and loved him.

A time of visitation and fellowship will be held Saturday, January 12, 2019 from 12-1 p.m. at Rouse Funeral Home with a memorial service to follow at 1 p.m.

Forries is survived by his wife of 11 years, Joy Dawson; seven children, Stephen Dawson and wife, Mira Luna, Janie Snowden and husband, Greg, Jeanie Dunham, Ronnie Dawson and wife, Annabelle, David Dawson, Link Dawson, and Terri Ekin and husband, Jim; sister, Geraldine Lancaster; son-in-law, Dan Davenport; Joy’s children, Dean, Michael and Stephanie; 10 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Forries was preceded in death by his first wife and the mother of his children, Margaret Dail Dawson; two children, Angela Davenport and Dwight Dawson; and a son-in-law, Clyde Dunham, III.
