DEEP RUN — Despite a spirited effort from South Lenoir, the Blue Devils’ Senior Night ended on a sour note as Washington won 42-8 Friday night.
Although it’s been a tough season for Jeremy Joyner’s bunch, he had nothing but positive things to say about how much his team has improved week to week.
“I’m really proud of our kids,” he said. “They battled and showed a lot of effort and energy. My seniors played with a lot of passion on Senior Night, but we have to give credit to Washington. They’re a really good team and that’s why they’re going to be playing for a conference championship next week.”
10 seniors were honored night for the Blue Devils (2-7, 0-5 ECC) including defensive end Kokou Missebukpo and quarterback Brett Huffman. Huffman and sophomore quarterback Jon Howard split the snaps tonight with the senior getting to start, but it was a rough start for the offense as they punted on three of their first four possessions.
Meanwhile, the Pam Pack (7-2, 4-0) bounced back from a tough road loss against Greenville Conley last week. Washington racked up 450 yards of total offense against South Lenoir and scored touchdowns on its first three possessions of the game. Terry Moore, Antwone Godley, and Mykel Warren each had first half rushing touchdowns that put the game away early for the Pam Pack.
The Pam Pack defense nearly pitched a shutout and the Blue Devils had only 199 yards of offense. South Lenoir was able to move the ball into Washington territory multiple times, but couldn’t stay ahead of the chains.
“This was a huge trap game for us,” Blank said. “We didn’t want to look ahead to next week and I thought we did a good job focusing on tonight’s game. We got out of this game healthy and we executed the way we wanted to.”
All was not lost for the Blue Devils as Huffman had a great senior moment to close out his final home game, as he found sophomore Joseph Cobb for a 59-yard touchdown in the final minute of the contest. Kodjo Missebukpo added the two point conversion and those were the only points of the night for South Lenoir.
“I’m really happy that we scored that touchdown,” Huffman said about his late touchdown pass. “It was a good going-away message to my school and the community. Our team has come together and we’ve fought through a lot of adversity this season. We lost to a great Washington team, but we’re not going to hang our heads because we have a big game in two weeks.”
South Lenoir will have a bye next week and the final game of the regular season is against cross-county rival, North Lenoir, Nov. 8 in Wheat Swamp. Washington will head on the road to face West Craven next week. If the Pam Pack win, they’ll win the conference championship outright.
