Parrott Academy’s theatre department received four awards at the regional NC Theatre Conference Play Festival held at Mooresville High School on Nov. 1 and 2. As one of twelve competing schools, Parrott staged the play Selkie written by Laurie Brooks. The one-act drama is a coming-of-age story that revolves around the Scottish legend of mystical sea creatures.
Three students were honored with technical awards. Gabe Crail-Steinbaker and Helene Hoepner won the Theater Arts Award for Excellence in the Use of Live Music, as well as the Barbizon Excellence in Design and Production Award for Use of Incidental Music. Nastia Hnatov won the Barbizon Excellence in Design and Production Award for Scenic Painting and Makeup Design.
The cast and crew of seventeen students were recognized with the Festival Spirit Award for attending all sixteen plays presented during the two-day event. Theatre teacher Amy Calhoun noted that her students’ play incorporated multiple fine arts elements, such as instrumental music, art, singing, dancing, and acting. “Our school’s Fine Arts department stresses collaboration and interdisciplinary training, so it was wonderful to receive recognition for that.”
