Carol Sykes, mayor of Pink Hill, said the rural town's public library needs minor renovations and made her plea to the Lenoir County Board of Commissioners., which owns the facility.
The back deck is rotted from the sill where it connects to the building. The deterioration makes it difficult to move items in and out of the back of the library.
Sykes obtained an estimate from a local contractor, who offered two options for the current four- by five-foot structure. The first option is a total replacement that would cost $1,250. The second option creates a bigger eight- by six-foot deck that would cost $2,350.
The contractor also agreed to demolish the deck, remove all debris and shore up the existing siding for $1,500.
"We'd like to have option two because it makes a little bit bigger deck," Sykes said. "It's not that much more, but we would be happy with either one. We just need some help, if at all possible."
Commissioner Craig Hill said he'd like to table it for the next meeting when all commissioners are present. Commissioner J. Mac Daugherty was not present. Commissioner Reuben Davis passed away last Thursday.
Commissioner Roland Best expressed interest in visiting the library and viewing the structural damage.
The Board agreed to take Sykes' proposal under advisement.
