The Lenoir County WIC Program received the 2019 Outstanding Customer Service Award during the annual North Carolina WIC Conference held earlier this month Raleigh.

Maryanne Burghardt, the state's WIC director, said Lenoir County received two standout nominations for their outstanding customer service - one from their health director and the other from a Nutrition Plus contract dietitian who has visited the office on a regular basis.

"They were nominated on their customer service practices for the participants and population served by the WIC office, as well as the customer service efforts made to make their own employees feel welcomed," Burghardt said.

Award selection criteria included renew or inspire a spirit of service, create a participant-friendly clinic environment, improve participation satisfaction, respond to and provide solutions to participant inquiries, demonstrate creativity in the strategies used to improve customer service and offer organized, easy-to-use and adaptable methods or materials.

Burghardt praised the WIC team for its collaboration with Lenoir County Cooperative Extension to offer a nutrition and cooking class for their participants.

The team - WIC Director Tyjuana Atkinson, Janet Avila, Tonya Moore, Rebecca Yanez and Crystal Brown - were recognized for their achievement at the Lenoir County Board of Commissioners recently.

Atkinson said she and her team are honored and very appreciative of the award.

"Out of the 85 WIC programs in North Carolina, I am so grateful that our team achieved this exceptional accomplishment," Atkinson said. "Hard work and dedication pay off."

Lenoir County WIC recently earned the N.C. Breastfeeding Coalition Business Case for Breastfeeding Award. The program and the Lenoir County Health Department were recognized as a business/agency that welcomes breastfeeding mothers to their facility and that have also made accommodations to support breastfeeding mothers as employees. If breastfeeding women would like more privacy, there is a breastfeeding room available for their convenience.
