10. Open houses, hearing to discuss Kinston bypass

The N.C. Department of Transportation will hold three open house meetings and a public hearing on the Kinston Bypass this month. The proposed bypass is 22 miles long. It will be a four-lane, median-divided freeway, accessible via ramps at interchanges. It will help reduce traffic congestion and delays that currently exist along U.S. 70 between La Grange and Dover. Maps of the different alternative routes for the bypass can be found at the NCDOT Public Meeting website

9. Sponsored: Harvey & Associates' newest dentist is Kinston native

A local dental practice recently welcomed a familiar face back to her hometown. If the newest dentist at Harvey & Associates Family Dentistry looks familiar, it’s probably because she is. Dr. Mary Bec Keith, who joined Harvey & Associates at the beginning of July, is the daughter of Earl and Mary Margaret Keith of Kinston; she’s also a 2010 graduate of Kinston High School.

8. ‘Diesel’ takes over KHS AD duties from Tyndall

For the first time in seven years, there’s a new athletics director at Kinston High School.Ryan “Diesel” Gieselman, the winningest football coach in Lenoir County history in his six seasons with the Vikings, assumed the AD duties July 1. He replaces Perry Tyndall, who had been the AD at Kinston since the start of the 2012-13 academic year.

7. Jessica Ramsey Memorial Tournament set for Aug. 17 at LCC

A day of volleyball to honor a kindred spirit is set for Aug. 17. Lenoir Community College will host its inaugural Jessica Ramsey Memorial Tournament, starting at 9 a.m. that day. Ramsey, who passed away Feb. 7, 2018 during her junior season at South Lenoir, was cherished by not just her teammates, but across Eastern North Carolina. South Lenoir coach Lisa Smith said she believes the event is a great way to honor Ramsey.

6. Lenoir County restaurant inspections for June 17-21

The following inspections were conducted by the Lenoir County Health Department: El Azteca, King's, The Boiler Room, Tokyo House and Taqueria El Merendero.

5. SL basketball coach hired as new KHS assistant principal

Kinston High School’s assistant principal position has officially been filled by a man with a Deep Run background. The Lenoir County Public Schools board voted during Monday's school board meeting to have Jeremy Barnett take over in the capacity. Barnett graduated from South Lenoir in 2003 and started teaching at the school in 2007.

4. Retired Kinston city attorney 'Poo' Rochelle passes away at 81

One of the most important figures in Kinston’s history over the past century died Thursday when retired Kinston City Attorney Vernon H. “Poo” Rochelle passed away at the Crystal Coast Hospice House in Newport. He was 81. Rochelle was born March 7, 1938, in Kinston. After graduating from Grainger High School in 1956, he earned his undergraduate degree from Duke University and his law degree from UNC before becoming a U.S. Navy officer. Rochelle served as the Kinston city attorney from 1970 until his retirement in 2005.

3. Deep Run welcomes new restaurant

Residents of Deep Run no longer need to drive out of town to go to a restaurant. Farmhouse Restaurant on Old Highway 11 in Deep Run opened its doors a little more than three weeks ago, and in that time, owner Ashley Smith said she has been amazed by the response from the community.

2. One person injured in Kinston drive-by shooting

The Kinston Police Department is currently investigating a shooting that occurred Sunday evening. According to the KPD, the department responded to a call around 6:30 p.m. in the 2000 Block of Rouse Road, along with the Lenoir County Sheriff's Office, Kinston Fire Department and Lenoir County EMS. Officers found 22-year old Kinston resident Tyshion Turnage suffering from gunshot wounds to the upper and lower limbs. Turnage and a juvenile were walking along the roadway when shots were fired at Turnage by an unknown individual from a vehicle.

1. BREAKING NEWS: Afternoon shooting on Williams Loop Road

A shooting occurred on Williams Loop Road south of Kinston this afternoon. The Lenoir County Sheriff's Office received a call about the shooting around 1:43 p.m. The victim was shot and a car with multiple individuals in it fled from the scene according to LCSO Capt. Chris Cahoon.
