Kinston man celebrates 92nd birthday — with a workout

Rufus Allen had a nice surprise during his usual routine Friday.

Allen celebrated his 92nd birthday March 21 and went to Galaxy of Sports the following day. Allen, who has been a member of the gym for 27 years, works out Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at the gym. He was greeted by members of the gym with cake, gifts and song.

Galaxy trainer Latesha Strickland said Allen’s passion and positive attitude is contagious in the gym.

“He always comes in and greets everyone, telling them that, ‘No matter what you're going through or how old you are, it's still OK to come out and work out,’" Strickland said. "It makes you feel good, it uplifts you and encourages people. Sometimes when people are here they want to give up, they're tired and frustrated, but then they see Mr. Rufus come in and say, ‘If a 91-year old can be consistent and work out, what is our excuse?’"

Allen was born and raised in Kinston, serving in the Army for a two=year stint before taking on a job with the State Highway Commission, the predecessor of the N.C. Department of Transportation. He worked with the organization for 37 years and said he has seen numerous changes over the years.

“I remember Queen Street when it was only two lanes,” Allen said. “I was around for (Highway) 55, 70 and 11 being built for Kinston and Lenoir County. This was the time when Queen Street truly was the Magic Mile — if you needed anything in town, you could find it there.”

Allen said he’s always enjoyed working out and did so at home until starting at Galaxy.

"I had weights and benches at home — I was doing 120-pound reverse curls and everything," Allen said. "My daughter was worried I would get hurt, so I started coming here. As far as my weights, I remember there was a group of high school boys next door and I wound up giving them away to them.

“I’ve been working out my entire life and it's a great feeling you get at the end. You're tired, but after about an hour, you're ready to do it again.”

Allen said he’s been blessed and will continue to keep a healthy routine in and out of the gym.

"My dad told me the key to a healthy life was to love everyone who will let you and smile as much as you can," Allen said. "I smile most of the time."
