DEEP RUN — South Lenoir’s Sara Beth Stroud had a bit of a dilemma Wednesday.

Stroud had a solid game for the Blue Devils in their 7-1 road victory over Greene Central, hitting a two-run triple in the top of the second to extend the lead to 5-1 . Fielding-wise, the junior didn’t have an error in five chances, adding four assists.

The dilemma came earlier in the day, where Stroud was slated to run the 100-meter dash for the Blue Devils. The meet with South Lenoir, North Lenoir and Kinston took place at her home school, making time essential with a trip to Greene Central 38 minutes away, according to Google Maps.

The meet also started a bit late and while Stroud won the 100-meter race with a time of 12.74, the focus shifted to making it in time for a pivotal Eastern Carolina 2A matchup with the Rams.

“I was hustling, trying to make it back in time,” Stroud said. “Coach (Lisa) Smith told me I needed to be here at 5 p.m. (for the 6 p.m. game start). I just made it, and got ready to play.”

Kevin Stroud, Sara’s father, said the meet was set to start at 3:30 p.m. and when it was delayed a bit, there was a stronger effort to keep the event rolling.

“We were trying to rush through some of the events as fast as we could,” Stroud said. “We had parents running out to the field to help move the hurdles on the track to get everything ready, and after her race we jumped in the car and headed this way.”

Smith said she had no issue with Stroud participating in both sports and said it didn’t affect her much in the softball game as South Lenoir clinched a share of second place in the division.

“She made it in time and warmed up pretty well, so everything worked out fine,” Smith said.
