Lenoir County restaurant inspections for April 15-May 2

The following restaurant inspections were conducted by the Lenoir County Health Department:

Bojangle's

1028 New Bern Highway, Kinston

Score: 95.5

Inspection date: April 15

Observations:

  • Hand-wash sink was inaccessible due to a pan and scoop being stacked on the sink

  • Dishes located in clean dish area beside sink and on shelf beside second drive-thru require additional cleaning

  • Steak for biscuits on prep line was tempted at 103-171 degrees F, potentially hazardous foods shall be hot held at 135 degrees F or above

  • Tomatoes in prep unit were reading 41-45 degrees F and salads in prep fridge were reading 45-50 degrees F — shall be 41 degrees F or below

  • Scoops (flour container, ice machine, chicken breading area) improperly stored

  • Inside of refrigeration units, shelving and in cabinets underneath counters need additional cleaning

  • Mop bucket outside in dumpster area has an accumulation of water that has turned green

  • Dumpster area shall be free of unnecessary items

Jessie Bell's

Observations:

  • Beef tips, ribs and gravy, and rice on line were less than 135 degrees F — shall be at or above 135 degrees F

  • Raw pork chops and raw chicken in prep unit were above 45 degrees F — should be 41 degrees F or less

  • Mac and cheese in reach-in was 83 degrees F

  • Wet wiping cloth stored in soapy water — shall be stored in sanitizer

Hardee's

1344 U.S. 258 South, Kinston

Inspection date: April 22

Observations:

  • Employee did not wash hands after returning from dumpster area

  • Dishes in clean storage area were visibly soiled

  • Some single-use items in food prep area were stored in the way of possible contamination

  • Gasket on freezer beside cooking area is in disrepair

  • Inside of freezers/refrigerators, shelving, prep area require additional cleaning

  • Floors, walls and ceilings in kitchen and walk-ins need additional cleaning

Herritage Elite

910 North Herritage Street, Kinston

Inspection date: April 29

Observations:

  • Pot lids, bowls, measuring, spoons and plates were visibly dirty

  • Cut tomato and pimiento cheese were 45 degrees F and 43 degrees F — shall be 41 degrees F or below

  • Wash water was 100 degrees F while dishes were being washed — water shall be 110 degrees F

  • Shelving inside of refrigerator, inside of drawers, vents need additional cleaning

  • Toilet rim needs additional cleaning

  • Walls and ceilings dusty

Cook Out

Observations:

  • Some dishes were visibly dirty

  • Raw bacon, blanched bacon, cheese and chili meat were above 41 degrees F

  • Chili meat cooling in prep unit was 90-111 degrees F

  • Many flies in kitchen

  • Sanitizer in wiping cloth bucket was soiled

  • Dishes were stacked wet

  • Small prep unit lids were in disrepair

  • Several areas need additional cleaning

  • Public hand sinks need additional cleaning

  • Dumpster doors were open

Ken's Grill

Observations:

  • Couple of dishes had food residue on them

  • Lettuce, cheese, tomato and cabbage were 42-48 degrees F, shall be 41 degrees F

  • Chili from Saturday and chopped cabbage from Friday were not date marked

  • Flies in kitchen and pit room

  • Walk-in cooler and freezer latches in disrepair

  • Refrigeration units need additional cleaning

  • Floor tiles were cracked

Chicken Shack

602 North McLewean Street, Kinston

Observations:

  • No certified food protection manager present

  • Hand sinks did not have hand towels available

  • Chicken livers and gizzards stored above cheese and hot dogs

  • Prep unit holding at 52 degrees F — shall be 41 degrees F

  • Chemical spray bottles were not labeled

  • No sanitizer in wiping cloth bucket

  • Stickers on outside of plastic containers need to be removed to keep surfaces smooth and easily cleanable

  • No toilet paper provided in restroom

  • Grease trap lid was left open

Observations:

  • Some foods in cold holding were 42-53 degrees F — shall be at or below 41 degrees F

  • Employees were wearing Apple watches while preparing/handling food

  • Shelving and light fixtures need additional cleaning

  • Ceilings and floors under equipment need additional cleaning
