UPDATED: KPD IDs man found dead on E. Caswell Street

The Kinston Police Department has identified the victim in a death investigation. Thomas Burney Jr., 58, was discovered unconscious and bleeding at the 600 block of East Caswell Street at 3:40 a.m. today, and was pronounced dead at the scene.

No cause of death has yet been declared; a press release from the KPD stated the cause will be determined by the N.C. Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

ORIGINAL REPORT:

According to a press release from the Kinston Police Department, at 3:40 a.m. today, members of the Kinston Police Department responded to an assist EMS call at the 600 block of East Caswell Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered a black male who was unconscious and bleeding. The victim was pronounced dead on scene.

The Kinston Police Department is seeking assistance from the community in this investigation. If anyone has information about this incident, please call the Kinston Police Department’s Tips Line at 252-939-4020 or Lenoir County Crime Stoppers at 252-523-4444. Calls to Crime Stoppers are confidential and anonymous, and the caller may be eligible for a cash reward for information that leads to an arrest.
