A structure fire took place on the 2100 block of Tower Hill Road Friday morning, leaving two with minor injuries.

The Kinston Department of Fire and Rescue, as well as Hugo Volunteer Fire & Rescue and Southwood Volunteer Fire & Rescue responded to the blaze and were able to put the fire out in about 15 minutes. Kinston Fire Chief Damien Locklear said the residents were taken to UNC Lenoir Health Care for their injuries. The names of the victims are not being released.

Locklear said KFD installed smoke detectors prior to Friday’s incident, which prevented further injury.

“It was noted on a previous visit by the fire department, we put in some smoke alarms,” Locklear said. “The individual noted that’s what saved them because they were in the front of the structure, (the) smoke alarms went off and they were able to get out safely.”

KFD is currently investigating the cause of the fire.
