LA GRANGE — Tyreik Artis is staying close to home.
The North Lenoir Hawk committed to play basketball at Lenoir Community College Monday and said he felt comfortable with the Lancers, a team which would complement his style.
“I think the coaching staff (and team) is a good fit me and the way I play,” Artis said. “I know a lot of my future teammates out there and I’m ready to get out there.”
LCC assistant coach Kenneth Brown said having Artis on the team was vital for both his abilities and proximity to the school.
“We love to recruit locally, but definitely like Tyreik’s hustle, ability to block shots and defense,” Brown said.
North Lenoir basketball coach Anthony Loftin said Artis made great strides throughout his high school career.
“He’s an amazing kid,” Loftin said. “Between his ninth and 10th grade year he grew five inches and he improved his game, changing some things to become a more all-around player. He was a good player for us, led the team in blocked shots and we’re excited for his progression. He has the chance to play at the next level and he can only improve — nobody loves the gym more than Tyreik.”
