Justin Stout: Our favorite literary lecturer returns

While we are currently in the midst of efforts to increase awareness in the community that the Library offers much more than just books. Neuse Regional Libraries continue to make books, literature, and culture a cornerstone of our services. Presenting a collection of freely available books, both in print and digital formats, is a significant part of our mission, and promoting a love of reading and knowledge of literature is a priority as well.

The Library, with the help of its Friends of the Library organization, regularly presents programming that serves the cultural needs of the community. A perfect example of this type of programming is the incredibly popular lecturer, Dr. Elliot Engel, who will return to the Schechter Auditorium of the Kinston-Lenoir County Public Library on Thursday, September 12 at 7:00 p.m.

Dr. Engel is a renowned lecturer who has presented his informative yet witty discussions on a wide range of literary and historical figures throughout the United States and on every continent, including Antarctica. His ten books have been published in England, Japan, and the United States, and he has also written articles appearing in many magazines, including Newsweek. Dr. Engel is also a college professor who has taught courses at Duke University, N.C. State University, and the University of North Carolina.

Our library users have become huge fans of Dr. Engel during the last 34 years, as his insightful lectures are delivered in an engaging style and punctuated with Dr. Engel’s trademark sense of humor. Since his first visit in 1986, Dr. Engel has visited our Library 60 times, making this his 61st visit. His topic will be The Genius of Mark Twain, the first time he has given a lecture on Twain at our Library since 1997. Dr. Engel will discuss how Twain’s early life and works transformed him into America’s spokesman throughout the world. Seating for this event is limited and on a first-serve basis, so reserve your seat today by calling (252) 527-7066, Ext. 120 to make reservations.

Dr. Engel’s continuing popularity is a testament to the need for cultural and literary programming in our community. The Library plays a huge role in ensuring that these types of programs are available to every resident without barriers to access and free of charge. We hope that you will join us and take advantage of this opportunity to see a world class presenter in action.

As mentioned above, this event is made possible through the support of our Friends of the Library. The Friends sponsor numerous programs throughout the year, including musical concerts, literary lectures, academic competitions, and more. The Friends of the Library accept donations at all levels, but you can become a member for as little as $10 as an individual, $5 as a student, or $20 as a family. Corporate memberships are also available. The Library proudly recognizes contributors to the Friends of the Library, which makes corporate sponsorship a great way to advertise your business while also making a positive difference in the community. For more information about joining the Friends of the Library, please call 252-527-7066, Ext. 142.
