Letter to the editor: Thank you

Wooten's Crossroads Wreck:

We want to thank everyone involved in assisting & caring for my husband when he was involved in a wreck on Tuesday, October 6, 2020 on Liddell Road, at Wooten's Crossroads.

Thank You God Almighty, for saving my husband!

To Ryan & Melissa Goetz, we thank you so much for all of your help. Had y'all not gone out to help him, no telling what may have happened. We can't thank you enough for being there & for keeping him alert.

Thank you so much to the 2 paramedics on scene. It was a male & female; but, my husband doesn't remember the name of the female. The female spoke with me while they had my husband in the ambulance. I had called my husband to find out what was going on, because a friend told me that he had been in a wreck. She was the driver of the ambulance.

He remembers that the male is from Grifton & he thinks his name is Steven. If you happen to know either one of them or know someone that may know them, please tell them about this letter. We want them to know how much they mean to us & how much we appreciate all of their efforts.

To the ED staff & Dr. Keku at UNC Lenoir, a huge thank you for all of your hard work, dedication & efforts. Y'all hold a very special place in our hearts. Your quick, caring, professional actions, along with God Almighty, saved my husbands life! We can't thank you enough!

A very special thank you to Penny Heath Hill, RN/Supervisor. A real nurse; a true hero! While she was there for both of us, she went many extra miles for me. She is an angel. She went outside to get me & never left my side! She held me, as she walked me back to see my husband for the first time. He was in a horrific mess; but Penny comforted me, assuring me he was stable & that God was going to take care of him. And He did! Thank You, Sweet Jesus! And thank you, Penny! You have an extra special place in our hearts, always!

A very special thank you also goes to Meghan Moody, RN. This young girl has a long, special & rewarding career ahead of her. She is a brand new nurse & my husband was her very first trauma patient. But folks, let me tell you, you would've thought she was a career nurse already! My husband arrived before me & was in excruciating pain as Dr. Keku packed his nose.

Meghan, being new, was only observing. Upon realizing my husband had no one there to comfort him, she quickly jumped in. She went to him & allowed him to squeeze her hand while he was being worked on. He was afraid he was going to break her hand, because he was squeezing so tight from the pain. She remained bedside until he left on East Care. She was amazing & we will never forget her, her thoughtful actions & her comforting words. Another real nurse & true hero! An earth angel for sure!

Thank you to the 2 East Care nurses, Penelope & her assistant. It was extremely considerate for Penelope to call & let me know they had made it to Vidant safely. These 2 nurses were extremely thoughtful & the bedside nurse made sure he didn't get sick during the flight. You girls will not be forgotten.

For a final word, please let me just say, folks, be extra careful. Slow down, pay attention & most of all, put down those phones! My husband nearly lost his life that day for one of those reasons. Nothing & nobody is as important as the life God has given us!

Thank you,
Jason & Sharon Smith
