The Lenoir County Board of Education, acting on the recommendation of Superintendent Brent Williams, named veteran educator and Lenoir County native Jan Tucker as the new principal of Banks Elementary School on Monday.
Tucker had served as Banks’ interim principal since Jan. 2, filling the vacancy created by the retirement of Susan Glover at year’s end. The appointment installs Tucker as the leader of a school where she taught early in her career.
“The staff members and parents of Banks have expressed overwhelmingly positive support for Mrs. Tucker in the time that she has been serving as interim principal,” Williams said. “I am confident that her leadership will help take Banks Elementary School forward to the next level.”
Tucker comes to the principalship after serving as assistant principal at Woodington Middle School for 5½ years. Previously at Woodington, she worked as the curriculum specialist.
Earlier, she served as a National Board Certified Reading Recovery teacher and regular grade-level teacher at Banks Elementary and Pink Hill Elementary School, starting in 1994. She began her career in education as a teacher at Comfort Elementary School in Jones County.
“I am very honored and grateful for this opportunity. I love Banks and I look forward to serving our students, families and the community,” Tucker said when her appointment was announced at the school board meeting Monday night.
