Local moms start a Facebook group to adopt Class of 2020 Seniors
Christi Collins, Carla Williams and Laura Turner Eason
Three Lenoir County moms began a quest to recognize this year’s seniors as school shut down for the remainder of the academic year. Laura Turner Eason, Carla Williams, and Christi Collins are all senior moms. The three ladies have launched an effort to ensure that the class of 2020 in Lenoir and Greene Counties feel some sense of normalcy through gifts and encouragement from complete strangers.
Eason shared with Neuse News that she got the inspiration from another county saying: “I first saw this on Facebook in another county and shared it on my Facebook page saying I thought this was a great idea and Carla responded to set it up and she wanted to participate and Christi was a part of this from her home state and shared how it was set up.”
The Facebook group is called Adopt a 2020 Lenoir or Greene County High School Senior. The group was established on April 25, 2020. Eason says “ I really was surprised, we set this up Saturday night and in a matter of a couple of days we have over 2,000 members and over 200 Seniors that have been adopted and most of them by more than one person.”
The group exploded and seniors from both counties quickly got adopted and are now connected with someone from the community, most are providing encouragement and gifts for these students. Parents of Seniors in Greene and Lenoir are encouraged to join the group and post information about their Senior. Eason says the group is open to anyone who wants to join in. Once a community member finds a senior to adopt, they simply “ comment adopt under the post and the family should contact them. By adopting they can give them prayers, words of encouragement, gas/gift cards, a gift basket.”
