Free community college courses available to high school students through Career and College Promise

Free online classes are available to area high school students this fall at Lenoir Community College through the innovative Career & College Promise (CCP) dual enrollment program.

According to the North Carolina Community College System (NCCCS), about 59,000 high school students across the state took CCP courses, saving them time and money toward a college degree.

“CCP is a partnership between the North Carolina Community College System and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction,” LCC President Dr. Rusty Hunt said. “This program offers two pathways for high school students, career and technical education and college transfer, and is an opportunity for students to get a head start on a college degree while in high school.”

Senior Vice President of Instruction and Student Services Dr. Deborah Grimes said that transfer courses are weighted the same as Advanced Placement for grade point averages on high school transcripts.

“Many of our CCP students earn enough credits for a degree or credential by the time they graduate from high school. Tuition is free for all students enrolled in the pathway programs. We value our partnership with our high schools and we work together to provide opportunities to our students,” she said. “Our courses are designed to keep students engaged in an online learning community.”

Director of Student Success and Equity Athena Wilson agreed. “LCC has an excellent relationship with our area high schools and their counselors,” she said. “The College and the high schools work closely to ensure students are taking the appropriate courses that lead to a credential. LCC offers face-to-face, online and synchronous classes, giving our students options when registering for classes.”

LCC offers 22 pathway certificates and diplomas in the Career and Technical Education Pathway and two college transfer certificate pathways offered under the College Transfer Pathway. Through CCP, students can further their educational goals in preparation for transfer to a four-year university or develop skills to enter the job market, and keep students progressing toward their future careers.
