Lenoir County restaurant inspections

The following inspections were conducted by the Lenoir County Health Department:

 

Irie Eats

Date: 9/10 

Location: 203 Caswell Street, Kinston 

Score: 83.5 

Observations: 

No certified food manager present. 

Raw, shell eggs stored over ready to eat food. 

Few knives in plastic jar-not cleaned thoroughly. Meat prep sink has black scum & is currently in use. 

Foods in middle unit are 42-43F. 

Few pots of leftover food from approximately 10-14 days ago, beef pocket, fried chicken breast, lettuce, & tomato are not date marked. 

Foods in freezer are not frozen. 

Splashguard that was installed between meat prep sink and vegetable prep sink is on the floor. 

Spatula stored in container of cut lettuce and cut tomato was stored so that the handle was in contact with the food. 

Caulk between food and prep sinks where splashguard is missing is rough and peeling away. 

Some cooking pots have buildup on the outside. 

Variance for 2-compartment sink is not being followed. 

Shelving, bottoms of refrigerators and freezer, inside bottom of oven, faucet handles, microwave handle, sides and bottoms of equipment, equipment legs, equipment handles, spice storage racks, etc. need additional cleaning. 

Several used, empty grease jugs stored on ground just outside back door. 

Ceiling tile damaged, peeling paint on walls. Floors are soiled with spills and grit/greasy/dusty. 

 

Wendy’s  

Date: 8/31 

Location: 4535 US Hwy 70 W, Kinston 

Score: 97 

Observations: 

Employee handled cell phone and did not wash hands or change gloves. 

Hand sink beside ice machine does not have paper towels. 

Cheese sauce on prep line and spicy nuggets tempted below 135F in hot holding. 

Some flies present in kitchen. 

Bottom of reach-in freezer, top of thermometer probe, and reach in handles need additional cleaning. 

Cardboard dumpster lid and dumpster door were open. 

 

Moss Hill Elementary Cafeteria 

Date: 9/01 

Location: 6040 Hwy 55 W, Kinston 

Score: 100 

Observations:

Procedures are being followed. 



RHA Health Service NC, LLC 

Date: 9/03 

Location: 5840 Greenwood Avenue, La Grange 

Score: 98.5 

Observations:

Thermometer read 20F in ice water 

Box of food in walk-in freezer stored on the floor. 

Scoop in food thickener was stored with handle in contact with the food. 

Several dishes stacked together wet. 

Dumpster door left open. 

Floor in walk-in freezer needs additional cleaning.

 

Kinston High School Cafeteria 

Date: 8/25 

Location: 2601 N Queen Street, Kinston 

Score: 100 

Procedures are being followed.

 

Kings Restaurant  

Date: 8/26 

Location: 405 East New Bern Road, Kinston 

Score: 90.5 

Observations: 

Employees were not knowledgeable about employee health policy. 

Raw shell eggs stored above ready to eat cucumber salad and barbeque sauce. 

Several plates, deviled egg dishes, and stainless steel pans had food residue or residue from breader. 

Slaw and potato salad temped above 41F. 

Sanitizer in buckets and spray bottles is too strong and is over 200 ppm. 

Flies present in kitchen. 

Wet wiping cloths left lying around kitchen. 

Scoop in in large yellow sugar container has no handle and is stored in contact with food. 

Dishes stacked together while wet. 

Gasket on Artic Air refrigerator is in disrepair. Cinder blocks used to prop up grill are not easily cleanable and are not approved. 

Several nonfood contact surfaces need additional cleaning, including refrigerator handles, cinder blocks underneath grills, and shelving. 

Wash/mop sink does not have a backflow preventer. 

Several floor tiles are cracked or in disrepair. Floor tiles are not smooth and easily cleanable. Floors need additional cleaning. Mops stored with heads facing up.

 

Taqueria EL Merendero 

Date: 8/26 

Location: 708 S Front Street, Pink Hill 

Score: 100 

Observations: 

Procedures are being followed. 

 

Bojangles  

Date: 8/28 

Location: 3007 N Herritage Street, Kinston 

Score: 98.5 

Observations: 

Coleslaw in drive-thru reach in temped 45-46F. Milk in drive-thru reach in temped 43-46F. Slaw in walk-in temped 46F. 

Thermometer read 26F in ice water. 

Two-door reach-in freezer in cook area has food debris in the bottom. Freezer has ice buildup on shelving directly inside of door. 

Cardboard dumpster’s lids were open. 




Arendell Parrott Academy Cafeteria 

Date: 8/31 

Location: 1901 Dobbs Farm Road, Kinston 

Score: 97 

Observations: 

Ham sandwiches in hot holding temped 109F.

 

The Mad Hatter 

Date: 9/11 

Location: 212 North Street, Kinston 

Score: 98.5 

Observations: 

Several foods were above 41F. 

Package of hot dogs not properly date marked.

 

El Norteno 

Date: 8/27 

Location: 1701 W Vernon Avenue, Kinston 

Score: 97.5 

Observations: 

Several foods in cold holding temped above 41F. 

Walk-in refrigerator is not cold holding properly. 

Ice scoop holder needs additional cleaning. 

 

Spring Arbor Assisted Living

 Date: 9/14

 Location: 3207 Carey Road, Kinston

 Score: 97.5

 Observations:

 Turkey, ham, and roast beef not date marked.

 Raw shell eggs are being used to prepare sunny side up eggs for residents.

 Boxes of food in walk-in freezer stored on the floor.

 

 Rose Vista Assisted Living

 Date: 9/14 

Location: 2130 Rose Vista Drive, Kinston

 Score: 96

 Observations:

 No Employee Health Policy in place.

 Raw chicken stored above cooked and ready to eat foods.

 Several utensils have not been cleaned thoroughly. 

One of two stem type thermometers is not accurate.

 Stacks of plates and cups are wet.

 Boxes of single service items stored in outside storage room.

 Steamtable does not work.

 Ceiling vent grate dusty. 

 

San Juan Mexican Restaurant

 Date: 9/17

 Location: 2423 N Herritage Street, Kinston

 Score: 93

 Observations:

 No employee health policy in place.

 Air curtains at kitchen entry door draped over hand sink.

 Queso in walk-in was 52F-60F made the night before.

 Salsa in small reach in upfront was 50 degrees.

 Taco salad bin missing/broken lid.

 Dishes stacked wet.

 Gasket on prep unit door and walk-in door in tear and falling off.

 Inside of refrigeration units, outside of equipment, dish area, gaskets, ceiling vents and hood need additional cleaning.

 Dumpster missing one lid.

 Some missing/cracked floor tiles. Some walls cracking. Floors, walls, and ceiling need additional cleaning.

 

 Ma’s Hot Dog & Variety

 Date: 9/15

 Location: 2515 Hwy 258 S, Kinston

 Score: 90

 Observations:

 No certified food manager present.

 Staff were preparing burger with bare hands.

 Raw hot dogs were placed in a brand new steamer.

 Lots of mouse droppings in wooden cabinets & drawers and in back room. Roaches around refrigerator by back door in back room.

 Wet wiping cloths laying around.

 Domestic refrigerators, freezers, crock pots, stove used,

 No test strips available.

 

 Quick and Chicken

 Date: 9/11

 Location: 802 W Vernon Avenue, Kinston

 Score: 99

 Observations:

 Noodles in prep unit temped 43F.

 Scoops used for rice were held in room temperature water.

 Scoops in flour, sugar, etc. stored with handle touching food.

 Date: 9/4

 Location: 1558 Hwy 70 E, Kinston

 Score: 99.5

 Observations:

 One thermometer read 20F in ice water.

 Wet wiping cloths left out around kitchen.

 Dumpster door left open.

 Observations:

 Observations:

 Microwave needs additional cleaning.

 Scoops for sugar, flour, etc. need additional cleaning,

 Large buckets of sauce were stored on floor uncovered.
