Parrott Academy joins National Day on Writing
October 20th was a special Wednesday at Parrott Academy as students and teachers marked the National Day on Writing sponsored by the National Council of Teachers of English. Teachers. Students in grades 6-12 created displays throughout the school to showcase the variety of ways that they use writing, both practical and creative.
Ninth graders posted original introductions to Bradbury’s classic novel Fahrenheit 451, which they have been studying. They also displayed original six-word stories and longer pieces of short fiction. Junior students displayed a variety of essays, short fiction, and personal letters, while seniors answered the question “WHY I WRITE” and posted their responses outside their classroom. Middle schoolers showcased patriotic essays and letters to veterans.
Spearheading Parrott’s celebration of National Day on Writing, English Department chair Melissa Lambert developed the idea of a casual “Writers’ Lunch,” meeting to encourage students to share what they are working on with others. Twenty-two upper school students attended the first Writers’ Lunch on Oct. 20th.
