Annual True Smoke Out happening in La Grange
The Annual True Smoke Out event is taking place behind 3365 Fred Everett Road in La Grange. The venue opened on Thursday to members and on Friday at 8:30 am officials announced the opening of the Smoke Out.
“We’re holding this event because members kept asking to get together and just have good friendly cookouts and camping and this is what it came to after our fourth event,” said Co-founder of True Smoke BBQ David Watkins.
The competition includes:
Beef Rib
Steak
Wild Game
Pork Rib
Whole Hog
Young Cooks Demo
“All three prior events have been a huge success but this one is larger with twice the attendance,” said Watkins.
Competitors will turn the Beef Rib in at 12:00-12:30 pm on Friday, 1:00-1:30 Steak Competition turn-in deadline, and at 6:30 pm all food should be on the table for their first True Smoke BBQ Homecoming meal.
Participants are encouraged to cook as many different things as they’d like for an old-fashioned style meal. Music will be provided by a band on Friday and Saturday.
The judges are preselected. Participants can use any heat source they choose. Each of the True Smokes contests will be judged on the appearance of meat, level of done, and taste.
The event continues into Saturday. The time to turn in the Wild Game is Saturday at 12:00 pm, the time to turn in the baby Back Pork Rib is at 1:00 pm. Young cook demonstrations happen at 2:00 pm. Whole hog judging begins at 4:00 pm. At 5:30 pm the awards will be given out and at 6:30 pm, the band plays.
“The best thing that I’ve learned about barbecuing is there still good people in this world that love to just cook, share and hang out and have a good time,” said Watkins.
