Hugh Pollock receives order of Long Leaf Pine

Kinston citizen Hugh Pollock was recognized on Sunday, October 31st, at Queen Street Methodist Church where he received the Order of the Long Leaf Pine. Pollock’s achievements as an educator, coach, dedicated church member, and Kinston civic leader were cited as he received the award. Bill Rowland, a member of Queen Street UMC who was inducted into the Order in 2012, nominated Pollock for the prestigious honor bestowed by the Governor of the state.

Hugh Pollock has opened the door to opportunity for Parrott Academy students during his 53 years at the school.

At the end of June, Pollock retired from a 53-year career at Arendell Parrott Academy. During his distinguished tenure, he served as a classroom science teacher, a decorated coach of championship basketball and golf teams, and the school’s veteran Associate Headmaster. Pollock has also served on the local hospital board and been a dedicated member of the Queen Street Church congregation.

Presented during the church’s 11 a.m. worship service, the award came as a surprise to Pollock. His family and many friends attended the service to celebrate his induction. Renowned coach and Long Leaf Pine recipient George Whitfield said, “Hugh Pollock has been an ideal teacher, mentor, and school administrator with a true heart for service. His loyalty and dedication are outstanding. Anyone who can stay for 53 years and serve one school as he has, well, my hat’s off to him.”
