KPD officers responded to reports of gunfire
On December 29, 2021, at approximately 1:08 am, KPD officers responded to reports of gunfire in the area of the 500 block of East Shine Street. Officers arrived in the area and observed two groups of people shooting at each other. As officers approached the individuals shooting, they separated from each other and fled. Officers were able to perform a vehicle stop on a vehicle fleeing the area that was involved in the incident. One of the passengers of the vehicle exited the vehicle and fled from officers with a handgun in his hand. After a quick foot chase, officers safely apprehended the subject and recovered the firearm. Officers located a second firearm on the subject as well. Both firearms were reported stolen. The subject was later identified as a 14 year old juvenile. The juvenile was served juvenile petitions for his criminal charges.
Officers located narcotics in the vehicle, as well as another firearm on the ground beside the vehicle. The driver of the vehicle, Tamoz Roberts (age 24) of Kinston, was arrested and placed in the Lenoir County Detention Center under a secured bond. Roberts was charged with the following:
• 2 Counts of Possession of a Stolen Firearm
• 2 Counts of Possession of a Firearm by Felon
Officers also charged another occupant of the vehicle, Daveyontae Miller (age 20) of Kinston, and placed him in the Lenoir County Detention Center under a secured bond. Roberts was charged with the following:
• 2 Counts of Possession of a Stolen Firearm
• Possession of Schedule VI
• Discharge a Firearm within the City Limits
We are extremely thankful no one was hurt in this incident and our officers were able to recover 3 illegally possessed firearms. We place the highest priority on investigating crimes of violence perpetrated in our city. We will investigate such cases with no compromise for crime, and continue to seek assistance from the community we proudly serve.
