A team of ten Parrott Academy middle school students won first place in the state of North Carolina in the NC Association of Scholastic Activities art showcase competition this spring. Among the ten students, three won state championship recognition: Abigail Williams won in Collage, Carolina Jones won in Mixed Media, and Georgia Fanning won in Photography.
Additionally, Nandita Roychowdhury won a state Honorable Mention for Painting. Other team members were Sophia Akhter, Georgie Lewis, Ellen Jones, Sarah Wentz, Mary-Grace Hamlett, and Brice Brodish. These students’ works faced off against entries from ten other middle schools who advanced to state competition, commented APA middle school art teacher Samantha Rouse.
APA’s high school art team also achieved state recognition, placing sixth among twenty-five competing schools. Freshman Miles Hulka was high school State Champion in Collage.
Additionally, two Parrott high school art students have won honors in the Congressional Art Competition for North Carolina’s Third District. Senior Jordan Riggs won first place for her piece entitled “Covid Dancer,” and Nastia Hnatov won third place for a mixed media entry entitled “Goodbye, Friends.” Riggs’ work will hang in the Capitol tunnel in Washington DC for the year, while Hnatov’s piece will hang in Rep. Greg Murphy’s Greenville office. Both students are taught by APA high school art teacher Jana Miller.
