Kinston High Track Teams Win Conference Championship
Tuesday, June 8th the Kinston High School Men’s and Women’s track teams won the 2021 Conference Title.
Competing against local teams like North Lenoir, Ayden-Grifton, and West Craven, Kinston High came out on top with the women at 146 and the men reaching 137.
Coach Corey Bryant of the men’s team said this year's conference championship was no walk in the park for the men’s or women’s teams.
“This year we went through a lot of adversity like other schools, we didn’t actually get the chance to have an indoor season, and of course the covid issues.”
Bryant mentions that one of the most challenging parts of the season was the size of the team, due to less participation for in-person events.
“The numbers that are typically available to us weren't there. Instead of 30 to 35 guys, I had about 15-20 guys all year.”
Despite these setbacks, Bryant is proud of his team for fighting through adversity.
“The perseverance of the guys and trying to avoid injuries all of this coming into play. I think things went pretty well considering we won the championship. I’m just really happy the guys fought through and stuck with it.”
KHS Principal, Kellan Bryant noted how proud she was of Crystal and Corey, the women’s and men’s coaches, for how they have led the students through this season.
“Their [Crystal and Corey] dedication and support to the program really made a difference in how our students perform and outperform people when they’re on the track.”
She noted that this was the first meet KHS has hosted in four and a half years thanks to the brand new track facility.
The track teams will compete at regionals Friday, June 18th at Croatan High School.
