Parrott alum wins top faculty award

Parrott Academy teacher Mary Kathryn Hill  receives the Hobgood Distinguished Faculty Award at APA’s June 4th  graduation.

Parrott Academy teacher Mary Kathryn Hill of Kinston received the Annie Belle Edwards-Hobgood Distinguished Faculty Award at the school’s June 4th graduation ceremony.

Hill, who graduated from Parrott in 1985, has served on the faculty for 20 years.  As a kindergarten teaching assistant, she completed her teaching degree and moved to the fourth-grade classroom.  Her skill in math instruction led her to develop a popular math prep summer program for fifth and sixth graders, and in 2020 she moved to a sixth-grade math/science teaching position. She also currently co-chairs the School Improvement Team.

The Hobgood Award is the highest honor that the school bestows on a faculty member. Surrounded by her family on graduation night, Hill said that she was “shocked, honored, and flattered.”  She also credited the APA faculty for their efforts through the pandemic.  “This year the award could have been for our entire faculty and staff. We have pulled together and taken all measures possible to keep our students in the classroom.”
