City of Kinston to hold Citizen Academy
KINSTON — Are you interested in learning more about how the City of Kinston operates? Take part in the City’s citizen academy, Kinston 101!
Beginning September 9th, the city will offer a free ten-week program for residents on the City’s inner workings to increase their capacity to participate in government. Each session, participants will visit a different city department, ask questions of the department head, and engage in hands on activities. Participants will visit the fire department, tour our city parks, create a mock budget, and more! Sessions will take place 5:30 to 8:00 p.m on Thursdays evenings, and two Saturday morning tours.
Kinston 101 is designed to give citizens a broad but comprehensive understanding of city operations and opportunities to be involved, while giving city leaders the chance to identify better ways of communicating with citizens and involving them more in government work. Graduates of Kinston 101 will have a broad knowledge of city services, better relationships with city leaders, and the chance to share that knowledge with other people in the community.
Participants can expect to learn about:
Kinston’s form of government, including the role of the city council and city manager
How the city sets priorities and spends money
Police and fire operations
City public services
