Parrott students return to classrooms
With bulging bookbags, full pencil cases, and face masks, Parrott Academy students returned to classes this week, marking the start of the school’s 56th academic year. On Monday and Tuesday, lower and middle school students attended a half-day of classes, and Wednesday saw the return of 214 high school students to campus.
On August 18th, parents and teachers received notification of revised COVID protocols which are similar to last year’s. Students, teachers, and staff will wear masks in classrooms and when moving around indoor spaces and common areas. Six-foot spacing of desks, hand sanitizer, and wiping down desks with sanitizer between classes are also part of the protocol. Unlike last year, students will be assigned lockers but will wear masks when using them.
New Head of School David Moody commented, “We’re all disappointed that we can’t return to a mask-free campus right now, but the data clearly show that slowing the spread of the new delta variant of COVID remains a challenge. We want to protect each person who comes on our campus, and especially our children.” Moody added that he would continue to be in contact with healthcare professionals and will reassess these measures in four weeks.
Senior Elliana Sylvia said, “We can’t see each other’s faces, and that’s sad. But it’s beneficial if it helps with COVID.” Classmate Morgan McPhaul noted, “I got out of the mask routine over summer, but I’m adjusting. I’m just excited to be back.”
This year’s student body of over 650, including 87 new students, is drawn from 12 counties. Lenoir County youngsters make up 30% of the enrollment.
