Former Neuse News intern now at General Assembly

Mackenzie Cannon, a former intern of Neuse News / Magic Mile Media, has started a new journey in Raleigh with the NC General Assembly as a Senate Intern.  Cannon interned at Magic Mile Media from June 2020 through August 2020.

“I learned so much, not just in the work field but also as a person,” said Cannon. “I learned what interests me as an actual career, and what I would like to do for my career. I also made great connections with different people while working there.”

Cannon is a North Lenoir graduate and a Communication Studies Pre-Law major at Campbell University.

“I wanted to intern at the General Assembly because politics have always interested me, but I have never been really vocal about it,” said Cannon. “I wanted to see the behind-the-scenes action, and everything that goes into what we see, as the general population.”

She hopes the internship will allow her to gain experience in the political world and allow her to network with like-minded individuals.

“Overall, I want to do whatever I can to be informed and knowledgeable about everything going on in our state, and the country as a whole,” said Cannon. “There are definitely things we, as a state and country, need to fix. And it can be fixed.”

As an intern with Magic Mile Media, Cannon did a lot of work with social media. She assisted with growing clients' social media platforms.

“Of course I learned different tips and tricks involving social media, but the most important thing I learned was how to talk with people and connect with them,” said Cannon. “With Magic Mile Media I got to interview different clients of ours, and with that, I learned how to talk to people and what questions to ask, even if I wasn’t too sure about what they did as a business.”

One of the skills she learned that will help her in the future is how to get a conversation moving in the direction she wants it to.

“I learned how to get conversations going, no matter what information I already knew,” said Cannon. “With this internship, the ability to talk to different people and start conversations is going to be very important. Communication is crucial. Especially communication in the right way.”
