Snow Hill - Greene County Board of Education met in their regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, November 28, 2022. At the meeting, Chair Pat Adams and Vice Chair Joe Smith were recognized as they are leaving the board after 48 combined years of service. The recognition took place at the beginning of the meeting.

Prior to recognizing Adams and Smith, Board member Brandon Johnson led the board in a moment of silence in memory of Jah’Tayvious Edwards, a Greene Central High School football standout and student that was killed over the weekend in a car accident. Mr. Johnson asked that all present take a moment to pray for his family and the Greene Central Community. 

Following the opening and recognition of Adams and Smith, Astrid Nava who serves as the district's communications director recognized the first Greene County School Employee of the Month, Patricia Riggs, 7th Grade ELA and Grade Level Chair at Greene County Middle School. Mrs. Riggs was not present but was recognized at school on Tuesday. 

Antonio Blow, Director of Students Service, shared with the board an increase in funding from the state in the area of student safety and security. Mr. Blow shared that Greene County has received “additional money from the Department of Public Instruction awarded in three different categories. The first being for School Resource Officers in the amount of $220,000, Safety in the amount of $186,000, and Services for Students in Crisis in the amount of $224,000.” Blow explained that the school resources office funds were only allowed to be focused on middle schools and elementary schools.

Blow added, “We have a great relationship with our sheriff and the chief and these funds are already being used to help add resources officers. The Students in Crisis fund would help the district be able to fund extra and emergency counseling services, much like what was needed with this weekend’s death.”

Chair Adams acknowledged, “Those funds definitely came in handy with what you all were dealing with today.” 

The board also heard from Karen Stallings, Finance Officer, who presented an updated 2022-2023 budget. The budget totaled $51,088,932.

Mrs. Adams said, “I think when I joined the board it was $12,000,000, how times have changed.”

Also presenting to the board was Glenn Dail, Operations Manager. He shared with the board a recommendation that Mosley Architects out of Raleigh had been chosen to be the architectural firm to design the new Greene Central High School. Dr. Creech also recommended that the board approve a contract for a manager to aid Mr. Dail, Dr. Creech, and the board as they move forward with the project. Both requests were approved unanimously. 

Following the presentations, Cathy Williams, Instructional Accountability Supervisor, presented the board with the updated school improvement plan and asked for their approval. Dr. Rodney McKneill, Director of Human Capital, presented several policy updates. Following both items, the board entered the closed session, ending the public meeting.
